What is the UK ETA?

The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital travel permit required for visitors from eligible countries who want to travel to the United Kingdom. It's linked to your passport and allows multiple visits over a 2-year period.

How much does the UK ETA cost?

The official UK ETA costs £16 when applied through the GOV.UK website. Be cautious of third-party websites that may charge significantly more.

How long does the UK ETA take to process?

Most UK ETA applications are processed within 3 working days. However, some applications may take longer if additional checks are required. We recommend applying at least 1 week before your planned travel date.

How long is the UK ETA valid?

The UK ETA is valid for 2 years from the date of issue, or until your passport expires – whichever comes first. During this time, you can make unlimited trips to the UK.

How long can I stay in the UK with an ETA?

With a UK ETA, you can stay for up to 6 months per visit. This applies to tourism, visiting family and friends, business meetings, and short-term study courses.

Do I need an ETA to transit through the UK?

Yes, from 2025 you need a UK ETA even if you're only transiting through a UK airport without passing through immigration (airside transit).

Which countries need a UK ETA?

Most countries that previously didn't need a visa to visit the UK will now need an ETA. This includes USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, and EU countries.

Can I work in the UK with an ETA?

No, the UK ETA does not permit you to work in the UK. If you want to work, you'll need to apply for an appropriate work visa.

What documents do I need to apply?

To apply for a UK ETA, you need: a valid passport, an email address, a debit or credit card to pay the £16 fee, and a smartphone to take your photo.

What if my ETA application is refused?

If your ETA is refused, you cannot travel to the UK under the ETA scheme. You may need to apply for a standard visitor visa instead.
